My Dream Job Careers Consulting can help you to confidently apply for employment. As a boutique human resources consultancy firm, we are highly experienced in the preparation of new resumes, updating of existing resumes, development of job and industry specific cover letters, creating responses to selection criteria, interview and careers coaching. Overall it is our ambition to help our clients attain the positions they want through working with them individually, understanding their personal needs and selected industries and producing quality documents that deliver a competitive edge in the job market.
In the context of the current labour market, a professionally written, targeted resume summarising your work experiences, qualifications and competencies is your one opportunity to secure an interview. Our resumes cater for jobseekers at all levels and occupations in the public and private sectors and we are experienced in industries including (but not limited to) local, state and federal government, mining, oil and gas, construction, education, banking and finance, health, community services, retail, hospitality and administration. We assist clients who do not have any form of resume along with those who have a pre-existing resume needing to be updated. All work can be conducted via telephone and email for convenience. We will work with you to obtain the relevant information and ask the appropriate questions to ensure your document is individually tailored, representing your skills and experience appropriately on paper to deliver a compelling document that catches the attention of hiring managers.
When applying for positions, it is recommended to submit a one page covering letter to supplement your resume. The purpose of a cover letter is to introduce you, specify the job you are seeking, match your skills and experiences with job requirements, highlight your personal attributes and create a call to action. Cover letters are essential in most job applications and can be tailored to a particular vacancy or desired industry of employment. They are a must have tool for communicating to employers which position you are applying for and why you should be given an interview.
Selection Criteria and Suitability Statements
When applying for positions within large corporations or in government, it is an essential requirement that candidates respond in written format to a set of selection criteria that describe the personal qualities, skills, knowledge and qualifications a person needs to perform the role effectively. Selection criteria must to be written in accordance with stringent guidelines that dictate length and require detailed, relevant and evidence-based examples of how you meet each criteria, according to the STAR Method. Appropriate grammar, spelling and punctuation is also a key element in maximising your chances of being shortlisted.
We are specialists in the preparation of selection criteria, two page suitability statements and application forms requiring targeted responses to criteria questions, and have written these for a broad scope of government departments, including local, state and federal government and diverse private sector corporations. Our expertise in preparing selection criteria includes (but is not limited to) departments including health, police, education, environment, transport, community services, justice, local councils and universities. We will work with you to ask the appropriate questions and gather detailed information on your past work history to develop targeted yet succinct examples for submission.
With extensive experience working on government panel interviews and more informal, private sector interviews, these sessions enable us to impart our knowledge and provide tangible tips to help you manage nerves, build confidence and increase your success rate at job interviews. Our first-hand experience with behavioural-based interviewing techniques will enable you to prepare and perform more effectively at interviews and give you skills and techniques to stand out from other applicants.
Completed via telephone consultation, the coaching session will cover the following areas:
- Pre-interview preparation and how to make a positive first impression;
- Strategies to manage nerves, remain calm and present confidently;
- Examples of common interview questions and appropriate, structured responses
- Explanation of behaviour-based interviewing, using examples;
- Discussion of interview etiquette and questions to ask on interview wrap up;
- Simulated interview with analysis and critique of your responses;
- Post interview follow up.
Our interview coaching sessions are relatively informal and are not time bound. We will endeavour to answer all of your queries and impart a broad range of knowledge so have a pen and paper at the ready upon session commencement. We also follow up with a number of resources including fact sheets and informative video clips to help you apply your new strategies.
